The Service of Worship of the First Presbyterian Church of Ulysses in Trumansburg

World Communion Sunday

October 4, 2020

The Mission of the First Presbyterian Church of Ulysses
We are:
An active Presbyterian Church dedicated to belief in the Holy Spirit, God the Creator, and Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We celebrate the Lord’s presence in music, word, and deed. We participate in mission efforts within and beyond our church walls and offer companionship to those in need.
We want to be and become:
A warm congregation, welcoming and alive, vibrant with music and the Word, reaching out to share God’s love, visible in our community, attracting new disciples of all ages, nurturing and inspiring individuals and families at every stage of their Christian spiritual journey.
Other things important to us are:
• Forgiveness • Lay leadership • Christian education • Sharing the peace of Christ • Commitment to volunteer service • Acceptance, compassion and respect for others • Learning from each other through intergenerational fellowship • Nurturing our youth to be active, Christian disciples • Ministering and receiving ministry • Active engagement in the life of the church • Being good stewards of our blessings • Being open to change, with respect for our traditions and history (adopted May, 2008)

A special welcome to our visitors! We are glad you have come to worship God with us today. We hope you will return often to our community of faith, and enjoy many occasions for worship, nurture, and service. Please fill out the card in the pew rack so we may be more welcoming. You may place the card in one of the offering boxes.

The Welcome, News and Announcements

The Introit

The Responsive Call to Worship

One: To those without food God is generous
All: Yes, Our God is generous.
One: To those away from home God is generous
All: Yes, Our God is generous.
One: Today, here, where we live,
All: Yes, Our God is generous.
One: Let us Worship God.

The Unison Prayer of Confession
Sovereign of sovereigns, you dazzle us by your glory. You alone are immortal. The life you give to all living things is marvelous and to live in your presence is a great honor. We now express our thanks by making a faithful confession in the presence of many witnesses, living our lives as best we are able, and praying the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples to boldly pray:

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy will be done, thy kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil for thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.

Hymn#267, “Come, Christians, Join to Sing” (Please listen but do not sing)

1 Come, Christians, join to sing: Alleluia! Amen!
Loud praise to Christ our King: Alleluia! Amen!
Let all, with heart and voice, before his throne rejoice;
Praise is his gracious choice: Alleluia! Amen!

2 Come, lift your hearts on high: Alleluia! Amen!
Let praises fill the sky: Alleluia! Amen!
God is our Guide and Friend; to us he’ll condescend;
his love shall never end: Alleluia! Amen!

3 Praise yet our Christ again: Alleluia! Amen!
Life shall not end the strain: Alleluia! Amen!
On heaven’s blissful shore, God’s goodness we’ll adore,
Singing forevermore: Alleluia! Amen!

The Hebrew Scripture Reading Exodus 2:2-10
2 Now a man from the house of Levi went and married a Levite woman. 2 The woman conceived and bore a son; and when she saw that he was a fine baby, she hid him three months. 3 When she could hide him no longer she got a papyrus basket for him, and plastered it with bitumen and pitch; she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river. 4 His sister stood at a distance, to see what would happen to him.
5 The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her attendants walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maid to bring it. 6 When she opened it, she saw the child. He was crying, and she took pity on him. “This must be one of the Hebrews’ children,” she said. 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?” 8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Yes.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed it. 10 When the child grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him as her son. She named him Moses,[b] “because,” she said, “I drew him out[c] of the water.”

The Hymn #525, “Let Us Break Bread Together” (Please listen but do not sing)
1 Let us break bread together on our knees;
let us break bread together on our knees.

Refrain:
When I fall on my knees
with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

2 Let us drink wine together on our knees;
let us drink wine together on our knees. [Refrain]

3 Let us praise God together on our knees;
let us praise God together on our knees. [Refrain]

We Proclaim God’s Word

The New Testament Lesson 1 Corinthians 3:6-8

6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. 7 So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters have a common purpose, and each will receive wages according to the labor of each.

Go now in peace. Never be afraid.

Reach out to others so all the world can see.
