Today we hear a tale of conflict and compromise. Paul is indignant that Peter has been compromising in order to appease differing factions. Paul appears to be beyond this, and condemns Peter for his perceived weakness. To us his attitude may seem uncompromising and arrogant; it may feel that Paul’s standards are so high as to be unreachable and unrealistic. But. Underlying all of his harsh words is the gift of grace which can help us through the most difficult of situations. As you prepare for worship, consider the times when you have compromised, or held back in order to keep the peace or avoid confrontation. Pray for guidance in your decision-making so that you will discern God’s leading.
