2 Kings 2:1–2, 6–14

“[Elisha] took the mantle of Elijah that had fallen…”

The prophet Elisha seems caught up in denial. He knows Elijah is leaving, but he seems not to want to hear it, as if not saying it somehow might delay it or make it unreal. Yet Elijah leaves, and Elisha finds himself alone. Or does he? He picks up the mantle of Elijah, and finds he can continue Elijah’s work. It’s not that there is any “magic” in that mantle; perhaps Elisha simply finds it brings the presence of Elijah ever closer, and in that he realizes he is strengthened.

Question to Ponder:

  • When have you found something brings the presence of another closer to you?
